Crest CC4000? Crown XTI4000? Crest CD3000 [message #277376]

All of these amps are pretty much exactly what i need (about 1400 amps at 4 ohms), but i'm curious if anybody has eny experience with these for subwoofers and like low impedence loads.

For instance the QSC PLX Series just did not sound very good on Subs in my opinion, but the PL6 sounded great. I just want something with a clip light indicator of i'm throwing too much power at my subs so i minimize the risk of blowing them.

I doubt you'd hear much difference with any of these amps.

I just want something with a clip light indicator of i'm throwing too much power at my subs so i minimize the risk of blowing them.

I think what you really need here is a limiter and the proper HP filter. By the time you see a clip light you are probably already in trouble.

In one scenario I was using a XTi4000 into a 4 ohm bridged load. The amp did not react well most of the time to that impedance. The same load on a PLX3402 worked fine. It's a tough load, but it was a disappointment the Crown wasn't a replacement for the QSC.

So if you like how a PL6 worked and don't like a PLX series amp, I wouldn't be looking at switching amps that are about that same price point as a PLX. There is a limit to how good a power supply you can get for that amount of money.

I have no experience with the Crest CC or CD. You may want to consider the Crest Pro 200 series. Good bang for the buck at a price not that much higher than what you are looking at. Do a search on PSW to see what others have already said.

I have limiters and HP filters, i just need a light to say "Hey We're throwing about 1400 watts (Peak) at your boxes right now....might want to back it off a bit. I don't think i'll ever be able to get enough bass, so it's about operating within a fairly safe power for the boxes (800 watts RMS).

An xTi will push about 3200w into 4 ohms bridged ...if properly fed.
I used them on some JBL 728s a few times, and switched back to XS1200s.

IF ... your speakers will handle 800W of continuous power they should be good for at least 3200W of peak power (as far as thermal power goes). Peak power rarely causes any harm to woofers. On the Ozzfest tour I ran the subs with Crest Pro 9200s bridged into a a single double 18 box (4 ohm load) ... 18 of 'em in fact. The amps will put out more than 6000w of continuous power and about double that for peaks. Proper HP filters as well as limiters kept everything in order. No failures in over 40 shows (and the system is still out with the Jager Mobile stage). It doesn't matter haw much power you have available ... it only matters how much power you DELIVER and for how long (thermally speaking)

As far as the Crest amps ... the CC4000 would be my choice for subs. It is virtually the amp amplifier as the Pro 8200 but with a conventional power supply instead of the switch mode supply found in the Pro series. It's heavier than the Pro series because there's a big honkin power transformer in it ... which is more often preferred for subs. The CD series is a class D power amp with a conventional power supply. It's an interesting piece ... it's best used when you have a limited amount of current available or when heat is a critical issue. I'd go with the CC4000 out of all you listed. My first choice would be Crest Pro series amps however.

BTW ... square waves makes no difference ... as long as you limit the power to the recommended continuous amount.

My Choice of those 3 would be Crest CD3000.

I use class-D amps myself (with SMPS supply), and they are good at powering Subs (and anything else).
Class-D amps also runs much cooler, end use less current.
And since these Crest amps use a Linear Power suply, they might be "perfect" designed amps to perform at their best in every situation >allthough they are more heavy than SMPS amps.

I have 5 of them along with two of the 1500 models. Three of the CD3000 units are powering one 4 ohm double 18 box (EV MTL2) per channel. The other two are running mids, with the 15 from two Yorkville TX4 boxes on each channel. They are run pretty hard several days each week. I bought them new 2 years ago and have not had a single failure or even a shutdown. They are not light weight. The current draw is very low in practical use. These 7 amplifiers (5 CD3000 + 2 CD1500) all run with 4 ohm stereo loads from a total of three 20-amp circuits (That is 18,000 PA watts). The amps put out less heat under load than any I've ever owned. The fans are plenty quiet for typical rock gigs. Crest has raised the price on them since I bought, but they are still a good deal for the amount of power you get.

What else would you like to know?
