OK, so, here's the deal. (Hokay, so here's the earth? )
Theme park in-park entertainment, a few regulars each summer who know sound, but typically people who don't know a whole lot about mixing. I would love to convince them to get an 01V or similar, but here's my main question that could help make my point. Is it possible to set up an 01V (or even some other digi mixer - Roland or whatnot) to "chase" SMPTE timecode over MIDI (like that from a Tascam HR) to change scenes automatically?
I know the 01V will advance scenes when it gets a specific parameter through MIDI, but I don't know if it'll read straight time code.
You probably have to understand the type of shows I'm dealing with here - same show 4 times a day, 7 days a week for about 4 months at a time. Same entrances, same cues, same singing, etc. We already have our lighting console set up to do this, so the lights are the same, I'm just curious if its possible to do this with any of the digital consoles out there to eliminate missed mute cues, music level changes, and the lead/backing vocal swap (ie, two singers - one sings lead on one song, backing on another song, and vice versa).
Thanks in advance!
(If this is a too advanced topic for the lounge I apologize - if so please move it to the main LAB)

Hello,
My little bar band is has been using a couple of Yamaha SM12V monitors. They work fine for our purposes - except for the weight.
I've been offered a good deal on the JBL MRX512M. Since we're a bunch of old guys, the weight difference alone seems like reason to make the switch (33# vs. 43# for the Yamaha's)
Can anyone offer an opinion as to whether the MRX512M are likely to be significantly better monitors than the Yamaha's for reason other than the weight?
thanks!

Hey All
I searched for this but couldnt find anything. BUt im looking to get some cases for my U15s. Similar to EWI's
http://www.audiopile.net/products/Cases/PA_Speaker_Cases/PA_ Speaker_case_products_page.asp
Does anyone know of someone who sells something similar? I would prefer not to have one custom made as im sure it will be more expensive. Covers will do but I would like something a little more stable. Thanks!

I did a small outdoor festival today for the county Parks and Rec department and despite the kind of rainy weather early on, it was a fantastic day.
After spending the winter upgrading my system, I finally got to fire it up today and the sweat and money were well worth it. Several folks on this site have said that the JBL SR-X cabinets sound great if you throw enough power to them and they are so right! 2 QSC RMX2450s bridged - 1 for each SR4719X, 2 QSC MX1500As bridged - 1 for each mid on the SR4732Xs and a 1500A stereo for the highs on the 4732s. 8200 watts RMS total. I have never heard the solid bottom end from those cabinets that I expected until today!
The other big plus was replacing all of my FOH processing with a DR260. The only issue I had with it was twice it rebooted, I think. Once during setup and at first I thought it might be the amps going thermal until I realized it would have been all 5 at once and they were only down for 20 seconds. It was just out of the blue and corrected itself before I could begin to troubleshoot. It was fine through the first band but a few minutes into the second band, it happened again. This time I happened to notice that the DR GUI on my laptop showed that it had lost comm with the unit. I unplugged the laptop and it didnt happen again. Its a new laptop with Vista so maybe theres a driver issue? I dont know but Ill be hitting the DBX forums tomorrow.
The only other "issue" was that I inadvertantly played a David Bromberg tune with the words "G D" in it during the break. Oooops - Ive listened to that tune a thousand times and never really noticed it but the county rep picked it up right away...
Anyway, the real highlight of the day were the 2 bands. Grant Austin Taylor - http://www.grantaustintaylor.com - a 13 year old Blues guitarist who has opened for Aerosmith among others and Matt Wigler - http://www.mattwigler.com - a 15 year old Jazz and Boogie piano player. These 2 acts were just awesome! If you get the chance to check them out, do it - they are both in the DC area - 1 from Norfolk VA and the other from Baltimore MD.
My wife's GBF must be close to zero... Can I measure that with Smaart?

Did a gig, it was an outdoor tent/generator country club party, just got home. I use an APC battery backup CS series 500va (300 watt) $110 unit on my foh - an LS9, dmx controller and Sony Discman on wall wart.
I got the system up, played a cd & pulled up the lights. I pulled the plug on the APC to see what would happen - everything continued with no interuption, the APC beeped to let me know the ac was interupted.
There has been interest in whether or not an LS9 or M7 would blip off and do the 18 second reboot (measured my LS9), I now know that my setup is safe, and I think the APC I'm using is just about the minimum performance UPS one should consider. I let it run about 2 or 3 minutes, then plugged it back in.
My concern for a UPS is to get solid power from a wall outlet while running the rest of the system on distro, and keeping the LS9 running in the event of power loss/voltage drop to foh. (If the distro power were to stay up while foh lost power, I would have enough time to run an ac cord up to the distro.) If the whole venue goes down, I could use the LS9 little lite to pour myself a drink.

Hey guys.
I was recently given 2 of these Vant NA152X dual 15" subwoofers for practically nothing. {http://www.vant.com/product/install/na152x_spec.htm} Problem with them is that the subs are blown and seem to need reconing. Originally I purchased them with the intent of putting some other subs that match the parameters. Now when I look at the drivers that are in there, I think it would just be wiser to have them repaired.
I went to www.vant.com and I sent 3 emails to them to try and get a repair estimate. No answer. I also went to a local pe\ro sound shop here in atlanta and the said they have no idea where they can get the reconing kit for that subwoofer since it is not a commercial model. Blasphemy to me but some shops are limited to what they can or will do. So,
1. Does anyone on here have a valid phone number or know of someone who represents this company who I can get in contact with?
2. If not, can someone recommend a local place in Atlanta to get them reconed?
Any help would be great
Thanks
P.S. If this is not in the right forum, can the administrators please move it to the correct place

First off let me tell everyone what I was planning on purchasing....
2 SRX715F
2 SRX718S
4 XTi 2000
I was going to run all four of the amps at 8-ohm Bridge-Mono to get a total of 1,600 W into each cabinet.
My issue / concern are the amplifiers. Are these a good choice? I did some searches here on the forum and a lot of people seem to be against running amps in Bridge-Mono. I am happy with my cabinet decision, but wanted to see what other options I had for amplifiers.
As for my application; I will be using this set-up initially as a mobile DJ.... argh did I actually say that. (I need to make a little fast cash and have an easy DJ hook-up.) My over all purpose for this purchase is to slowly build the system out to have a system that will cover small live events. I will add more cabinets from the JBL SRX line as money presents itself.
Any help, thoughts, guidance, butt chewing would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I'm looking for some info from anyone else whom does FOH mixing. This is a simple question, but I'm open to how to others do the same function.
Basically, what I'm interested in is the signal routing that you all have setup for your FOH boards; for the main output.
For example, when I run FOH, the signal leaves my master faders (but is run through an EQ off of the master inserts)... then it's routed to a compressor/limiter (only as a catch-all)... then it's routed to the crossover... and then back to the stage it goes.
How do you all have your signal routing setup for FOH? Do you feed your master FOH signal directly into an EQ first, or does it go to a compressor/limiter first...?
Looking for other ideas!
Thanks!

I realize that this is hyper-short notice, but it just dawned on me that people on this board might not be aware of this event.
Centrum and the Pacific Northwest Section of AES are presenting an event aimed at anyone who has to do live sound in a difficult venue.
The event is at the end of April. The registration deadline is friday (tomorrow!) at 5pm. Event cost is $315, and includes room and board for the 3 days/2 nights.

Just wondering if any of you are familiar with x-overs on the older peaveys....SP2's and 5's (roughly from 90' to 95'. I' been fryin like crazy latley and I'm really not sure what's goin on. I've replaced the bulbs and in the process I noticed some pretty bad burns on the boards...or at least the top one. I haven't disassembled them further yet. I wanted to get an idea of what I'm looking at before I start taking things apart. The filaments in the bulbs were gone. I'm pushing a pair per Qsc RMX 2450. I understand this happening on the 5's, but not on the 2's. We've been using them only for practice and just for vocal and a smidge of kick. HP filter of course on the kick.

These things don't seem to have shown up here yet in the flesh, just entries in a distributors price list - but they look intrigueing. A couple of questions about things I cannot answer fron the website piccys, before I order one :
FR4 or phenolic pcbs ?
Single sided or DSPTH boards ?
White flexitape interconnects(as used in MixWizards)used anywhere in these ?
Where are they made ?
I'm so glad they have stuck with individual channel boards and through hole components.
Cheers

Since I'm reracking a few items that needed repair I have a few fix it tips for the TDM stuff and the Peavey FBK EQ fo the other technically inclined folk on a budget.
The dual 31 band with the notch filters partially working:
If one output goes dead or pops, there are resitor networks on the input and output chips. These are the small in line black modules with 8 pins. They are 4 10k resistors in a single pack.
They are located on the power supply and I/O board on the bottom.
The one closest to the transformer (ch 2 out) and closest to the output connector fails first. This is due to flexing of the board because the transformer is heavy. Just change the whole thing to 4 single 10k resistors. Also the only two chips socketed on the main board should be exercised and inspected for oxidization.
RESOLDER EVERYTHING ON THE BOTTOM BOARD!!!!!!!!!
The solder used in those days crystallizes and the components break free. Use high quality solder such as 63-37. Other than the usual clean up that should do it. They sound damn good.
Especially check the two 10000uf 35v caps because the heat kills the solder connections and the caps will leak. Change them.
Any vintage or older classic run forever gear I get on Ebay, gets it's covers pulled and inspected whether it works or not.
Any green, white, rust, or crystallization around the solder connections and it gets a flux cleaning, deoxit, blue shower and a resolder job. The good quality line level stuff comes back to life with a vengeance. Power amps are another story with a number of additional problems only a good tech should play with.
The quad 2 way crossovers
They get HOT, real hot. If they keep blowing up, pull the top cover and drill a few holes over the heat sink regulator area.
I suggest gluing metal window screen or flame proof fabric over the holes. Make sure you have 1 ru above the unit. It will probably never blow up again on it's own. The customised units or the ones with the extra filters are especially prone. The extra couple of chips is enough to generate overheating.
I would not give up on these as they are rider friendly and very handy. Good to have around if the digital crossover or newer smd units fail. Great for monitors and can be used as a low cut if you don't have great eq on your passive monitor rig. This way your backup crossover is always with you. That's where mine is.
Peavey FBK eq's
Apparently when some moron breaks the plastic fader or slider handles in the critical ranges there is a way to get the unit back up till parts arive. It comes apart very nicely and is a very serviceable unit. +1 to the Peavey and Crest folks as the PV2k comes apart very easily as well. After disassembly:
The plastic sliders can be transferred from one fader to another if you have gentle fingers. First gently bend the handle side of the slider away from the fader body and it will pop loose. Then using a small flat head or thin blunt object, gently
"help" the bottom tab off pushing under and toward the left or to the same side the handle has popped to. Do the same thing to a good one preferably like the 20 20 or 20k and simply reverse the procedure to pop the good one where you need it. Unless the bad one is completely broken you should be able to pop it back onto the unnecessary frequency and set it for unity or cut.
Toss it back together and test it. You should be fine.
I wonder if Peavey sells the sliders by themselves?
One last note about Screws Here comes the baseball bat!
I find a ton of gear with all types of wacky non- original
screws holding it together or in a rack. If you lost a couple of screws to something, don't be lazy. Pull one of the original screws and try to match it as close as possible. If you cant.
OPEN THE UNIT. See what kind of room you have to work with and choose a new set of screws and change them all. This way next time you are in the unit you don't have to play which screw goes where? (ROFLMAO) Keep the old ones in your screw collection.
I've been finding a lot of repairs and used gear with screws THROUGH the boards, power supplies, and even into transformer windings and CD trays because they used a 4 inch screw instead of a 1/2 inch. I've seen nasty hum problems and strange shorts
and 6db drops eliminated by bypassing one piece in the system and unplugging its power, then discovering a replaced screw has shorted something, broken something, or cracked the board.
60% of the time simply removing the screw fixes the problem.
I have seen this on Pro touring racks so check your used gear.
Cheers.
