I think it depends on how familiar you are with the different people. Kind of like developing an attuned ear for background artifacts in reproduced sound.
Many years ago I was talking to a customer on a phone at the back of the music store I worked at. Just as I was finishing up one of the other salespeople answered a call at the front counter. She burst out laughing and was looking across the store at me. As I hung up the phone her eyes got really big and she looked back and forth at the phone and then me, held it out and shakily said "it's for you". I took the phone and my dad (who has a great sense of humor) just said "Who's giggles?" She thought I was fooling around calling from the back phone, teasing her. Never realized how much my dad and I sound alike until other people who didn't have much experience of one or the other of us would meet the other and make the same comment. Now people say my son sound like me.
I know there's something in a common gene pool that makes voices have certain similar characteristics. Harmony singing amongst family members always blends in a way that no other group can match. Even if they have radically different sounding speaking voices. Not sure what it is.

Ivan,
Man things must be slow. I think it's impossible for you to ever compare you and your son's voice except by using a recording. Most of us have only heard our voice from that nice cranium God gave us. There is definitely genetics involved but when you think about all the elements that make up our voice it gets quite impressive that the like sounding voice happens at all. I also believe environment plays a big roll in affecting our speech. How do you explain Madonna's British accent. or all these impersonators in Vegas. Every time I go back to NC, I automatically switch to redneck (get-r-done) mode. I lived in Minnesota a few years and sounded slightly Finlandy-ish. I'm sure your son spends enough time around his dad and has picked up the nuances of your speech.
I'd like to take a recording of my voice and shape it until it sounds like what I hear. I'm not sure its possible, but what would that look like? Might not be possible.
And I would think must of us in here think that our hearing is at a level where we could distinguish who is talking but those damn animated movies prove me wrong every time. We need the visual of the source to go along with it or we get confused.

There's nothing better than sitting back and enjoying a well-executed production. Of course, with ticket prices being what they are, the expectation bar is raised pretty high, and "On Broadway" would be the gold standard of theatrical production. I would hope never to see anyone have to write in about glaring deficiencies they had noticed in one of these "big-league" shows.

I was simply asking if he ever sold the van. I know that was not the main focus of the thread-but that part never got answered.
Hopefully he got out of it what he wanted.

Great work Tom. Maybe a little to much free time?
Evan,
This is gonna require some retribution that goes beyond, flour in the defroster vent or, car full of Styrofoam peanuts. I would think some kind of public humiliation is in order.
I look forward to hearing about the payback.

After getting response from photo forums I would like to get a second (third, fourth, ...) opinion on this:
My girl friend likes to have a new DSLR body. At the moment she got a Nikon D100. She is/was quite happy with the body and would like to upgrade.
So the D300 and the D90 came into play.
Technically it's quite easy: the 300 can do almost everything a little better. The 90 can do video. The price is 500 Euro less on the 90. This would be another lens so the case was clear.
Now it comes to handling. We went out to get a hand on the cameras.
She is saying: "The D90 is just missing a part, stripped of weight and size". So size does matter, after all?
The sad part: even the D700 is smaller and weighting less, seems like a trend.
Has anybody else experienced this paradigm shift and got experience with new smaller cameras?

The D300 and D90 are completely different on a quality scale. The D300 is an all metal body, with enhanced weather proofing and seals. If she is a pro, she's gonna want a D300. The D300 is going to just work faster. It's an entry level pro camera.
The video feature on the D90 is dumb IMO. There is no autofocus in movie mode, and you can only see what's happening on the LCD which is delayed by a few milliseconds.
Better yet, she's gonna want the D700. That is a full frame 35mm sensor. The D90 and D300 are DX 24mm sized. The D700 will perform better in low light with out a flash, which produces much better looking pictures IMO.
I've used the D80 extensively and other plasticy DSLRs... I got a used D200 a few months ago, and I the quality bump is amazing. The D90 is a great camera, but I just don't think it's a pro camera.
That said, the D90 and D300 will produce the exact same image quality under most circumstances.

Very well said, Ryan. I get similar questions from people about Rebel vs. EOS in the Canon DSLR product lines. The answer is similar too.
Hope you luck out finding that lens you're looking for.

The difference there is Nikon kicks Canon's butt. LOL. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Nah, they're all good cameras.
On a more serious note, the 30/40/50D and 5D/5D mk II are still plastic body cameras. The 1D/1Ds is an all metal "pro" body. That said, the 1D/1Ds are odder yet as the 1D has a weird 1.3x focal length multiplier with it's not quite full frame sensor.
I guess the main thing to remember is that just like sound, it's not the camera that makes you a pro. It's how you handle yourself and your work product.

It's all the fault of Eric Tipton of Wallingford, CT, who had too many windows open.
The White House Press Secretary admitted that the government did not have a backup of the Internet, although they have been meaning to get around to it.
