Thanks for the prompt replies. I'll check the cabinet models when I'm back tomorrow. They're JBL also. Big grey cabs with a trapezoidal footprint.
One of the amps has begun to emit loud, intermittent crackling noises (bad caps?), and rather than service them one by one as problems arise, my supervisor has decided to replace the lot. So yes, reliability problems.
The comment about bridge mono was on an amp manufacturers faq (I can't recall which one) and simply seemed to suggest that it was a less than ideal workaround for some situations.
Another question is what the optimum ratio of low to high available power should be. I was just reading "Danger: Low Power" (great article) which suggests that consumption is typically 10:1, but also that the amps, especially the high side, should be significantly overpowered to avoid going into distortion.
