We've had a 40 channel GL2800M for over a year in one of the San Francisco clubs I supervise the sound for. This is a 600+ person capacity venue that books name touring acts.
Everyone on the staff and most visiting folks that haven't been carrying their own monitor console have liked it fine. When they do bring their own console it only takes two people to strike ours. If the headliner has their own console and won't share with the support bands we still manage to fit the GL in the space alloted for monitor world.
It's needed very little work. One mix is intermittent due to an iffy solder joint at one end of it's main fader. Because the board is non modular and in use 5 plus days a week I haven't taken the time to disassemble it enough to make the repair.
I'm sure if we had taken it out of service long enough to deliver it to the local A&H warranty station they would have taken care of the intermittent mix.
We seldom need all 16 mixes so have been able to soldier on without one.
Usually there are seven mono mixes for wedges and drum fill and we have the other 8 set up for stereo in ears provided by the bands.
It's not an "A" list monitor console but for the price it's an incredible bargain.

OK, I found a great deal on a Sennheiser ew172 g2 instrument wireless system, and it comes with an extra headset mic.
I already have a wireless headset system so I don't really need another one, but my son plays drums and could use a headset mic, which of course will not need to be wireless.
Can these mics be adapted to be hard-wired to a mixing board input, without using Sennheiser's MZA900-P? I had sent an email to Sennheiser USA support and received the following reply regarding the MZA900P:
"This adapter regulates the phantom power the mic needs down to an acceptable level so there is no damage to the mic element."
Is this adapter a requirement, or a recommendation? If it's required, I'd be better off selling the extra headset mic and buying some other headset mic rather than spending the $130+ (!!!) or so for the MZA900P.
Has anyone run these mics with a simple adapter instead of this expensive one for any length of time, or is it a bad idea?

I really like the 718's, first off there super easy to move around, load and unload. I power them with a QSC PLX3402 bridged. Probably to much power for them at 1700w a box but I dont push them to hard. I want to try them stereo with 700w a box just to see or hear the difference.
How about the Growlers?

I have done a few club dates in our area (as a walk-in tech and provider/tech) but things seem to be really low-key at this time.....

Here are a few ideas, on both sides of the debate, use them as you wish.
1. If the club owners really only care about volume levels (and not speaker size) I wonder if you could tell them that that you are turning off one of the woofers, and only using one woofer per box. Of course you wouldn't be telling the truth, but a little white lie might solve the problem of perception. Personally I would rather move 2@ double 18 subs than 4@ single 18 subs, but YMMV.
2. Since you mentioned that you want to pole mount your speakers you might want to choose a sub with a built in pole mount (like the SRX718). That will be much better looking, and more stable than tripod speaker stand. I don't know if you can safely stack a pair of 718s and still use the pole mount, you should check the manual to see what JBL suggests. You can always put the subs next to each other instead of stacking them. You might be able to find double 18 subs with pole mounts as well, I don't know if the EVs have a pole mount, but I have seen double 18 subs with pole mounts on the long side, so you can lay them down and pole mount a speaker.

Regarding tip 1. Isn't one of the Ashlys on the tops enough (2x250W amp into 2x200W speakers)? I was a little unclear in my previous post, but I already got 3 of the Ashly amps.

Well, yes and no. You are probably already acheiving 90%+ of the speakers capability with the 250w amp, but your'e asking how to squeeze more level out of your system. Hence, the advice for more power. You will increase your risk of speaker failure with more power, but you will in theory slightly increase your SPL as well.
I second the reccomendation for better subs.

A subharmonic synth is an interesting beast.
It is a very limited use, extremely specific effect.
It should never be applied to the complete program feed/mix. If you read your manual, it may even say doing so can destroy your speakers-- especially if the program feed is cinema content (movie presentation). Can you say, big explosions + sub synth = woofer excursion test you didn't want to perform
It should never be used on straight vocals. If you have a singer, singing, don't use it. Your speakers sound like something is broke with them because there is earth-shattering bass going non-stop while the singer is performing.
The ONLY application I have found it to enhance and I would consider it a must, again this is very specific, is vocal percussion (aka beat boxing) OR a very (already) deep voiced bass singer in an a capalla group.
This can be your secret weapon in making a capella groups sound just out of this world, and not flat and amateurish.
It fills out the sound from being small, to having presence, fullness, and depth.
Never use it as an insert on a channel, always have a channel next to the signal to add or subtract the effect in addition to the dry signal in real time, if need be.
I've never had the chance to try it to bass guitar, but I'm wondering if it would do the same for that instrument as well.

I've used it - very carefully - on a few very different sources to good effect.
Great on solo acoustic, particularly those players who like to get that "kick drum" thump. I've also used it in a band situation where the music is aggressive and the acoustic is up front - think System of a Down.
It can really help fill out a string bass when the pickup/mic is lacking, provided you aren't getting a lot of drum bleed...
I like to keep it on an aux, which allows me to do things like send the floor tom to it when the drummer is spending time there. Or when the bass player is busy climbing on top of his SVT, I can send a guitar to it to fill out the low end a bit.

Eventide does it right.
TC Electronics Voiceworks stuff do it right.
DBX just extended the life of the 120A chip by including it in the Driveracks.
As others have said, used on the whole mix ...BAD. Fed and deployed correctly make you a wizard.

For effect, I like to use 'em (floor tom mostly).
Its like sub on an aux in that only the things you want to have lower freq extension should be sent to it.
They are no fun when the system doesn't have subwoofers, though and should not be considered a "fix" for anything I can think of.

That was a great night! Don't know if it was because of the smaller room (30'x100') or the concete walls but that was the most sound I've ever heard (6x Growlers, 2x Ambassadors).

Started taking my old 01V around town to various gigs I do both as an engineer and as a musician. What a work horse of an board!!
Anyway, I've found several times lately that I'd love to run the old C-Mexx C-Console software that would let you control the board via laptop using midi. Especially at one gig where I'm stage manager/music director for a jam night. I'd love to be able to tweak from the stage via my laptop.
I've downloaded the demo and I'm sure there are limitations like a trial time limit. Where can I get the full version? Their website is totally out of date and there's no links for where to buy ect..

No doubt!
I just downloaded what I assumed was a tips and tricks video from the cmexx site. Turns out it's a Lotus 97 file!! LOL
The trial software turns itself off after some period of time. I haven't found out what that period is. And you can't save to the PC. It might work for me for some gigs as I can just re-start I think. I don't know.
