OK, I confess.
I mix in stereo.
Yup, double the power needs, double the eq, channels, yadda yadda.
I grew up having two mono zones that can be eq'ed individually.
If I can get away with minimal panning, I'll do some, but hard pans are left for a (not too) effect.
So why do I return my fx units in stereo, into channels, and pan them at 9 and 3 o'clock? I assume whatever gizmo in that box is going to enhance the mono aux send into it, and put equal amounts R&L, and give me some sort of ambiance.
So I went on a little quest last month, trying out some theories.
I did a couple outside shows, and a few club gigs. Certain things I wanted to hear in fx I kept a little scratch pad.
What sounds good outside is just the same as a board dump off the mains to CD. Inside, I had a completely different experience. Some verbs require being mono'ed out just to be heard in the PA. Panned they appear as mud in the background.
Special panning effects are better left for the studio, guys.
Nice little 'to have' toys like this work out cool about %2 of the time. Of course, if you have proper coverage and all of the necessities including skill level, the averages will change.
But sometimes a good stereo reverb on a board dump can be fixed in the room with a little pan of the knobs.

Back in the 80's/90's TOA made a headset mic that had an input for IEM's with a beltpack that had control for for volume, stereo/mono, mic/line balance, etc. The drummer I work with has used this for years and sadly it has pretty much fallen apart. In theory it was a pretty neat idea for the time. It didn't get awards in the looks dept., but functionally it fit the bill nicely. I have suggested a few different ways of getting close to the same result, but he isn't thrilled with more than one beltpack. Also having control for the mic level/mute, and also IEM level right in one package keeps things tidy on his end. The pack ran on two AA batteries which made the idea of multiple beltpacks/batteries unappealing. I have posted on the marketplace to see if an old one pops up, but I am looking to see if another piece I am unaware of is out there. While there is little info on the original, I did manage to find an old data sheet that has a pic and a brief description of it here: http://www.gbaudio.co.uk/data/hy3.htm

Back in the late 80's, early 90's, TOA made a headset mic that had a control for IEM's. They were discontinued several years ago. I am looking to find one possibly sitting around on a shelf collecting dust. Here is a link to a short description with a picture. http://www.gbaudio.co.uk/data/hy3.htm

I just finished my second batch of 4 LAB subs. I was wondering how small differences in construction affect the sound--my guess is, that considering the long wavelengths involved, that 1/4" won't matter in most cases.
I took a shortcut on the baffles for the drivers. It calls for 2 pieces of 1/2" ply to be used, one with a smaller hole than the other. Essentially the driver is mounted to the first piece with another piece to stiffen. In my first batch, I took a piece of 3/4" ply and recessed it 1/4" with the router to keep the spec distance between woofers. This batch I didn't, making the woofers 1/2" farther apart. I haven't done too much for comparison yet, but I don't hear a difference.
Is this OK? Bad? Good?
