Thanks for the prompt replies. I'll check the cabinet models when I'm back tomorrow. They're JBL also. Big grey cabs with a trapezoidal footprint.
One of the amps has begun to emit loud, intermittent crackling noises (bad caps?), and rather than service them one by one as problems arise, my supervisor has decided to replace the lot. So yes, reliability problems.
The comment about bridge mono was on an amp manufacturers faq (I can't recall which one) and simply seemed to suggest that it was a less than ideal workaround for some situations.
Another question is what the optimum ratio of low to high available power should be. I was just reading "Danger: Low Power" (great article) which suggests that consumption is typically 10:1, but also that the amps, especially the high side, should be significantly overpowered to avoid going into distortion.
Thanks again. I'm so glad I found this site. I have a lot to learn.

Cliff, it seems that you have a considerably different idea about what you want your PA to sound like than what might be considered normal these days, or should I say in the last 30 years.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to sound different, but I for one am thoroughly confused as to your intentions.

My Dad doesn't appreciate anything more than AM radio bandwidth. And I can understand where he is coming from. Extended bass that is done poorly might not be better than well done bass that only extends to 75hz. Most musical instruments don't need low bass to be appreciated. As Antone wrote, electric bass guitar (especially the old motown types) is actually pretty deficient in the fundamentals but rich in harmonics. Fat bass doesn't necessarily have to go low. And when it comes to extended treble.... if you are an american over 60, can you even hear above 8khz?
Without hearing what the original poster does musically, I'm not sure what to recommend.

A 4x10 box is good if you're playing a bass through an SVT head. The 8x10 box? Doubly so.
But the 18" drivers in a proper enclosure will play much lower.

I suppose there's an argument to be made that modern kick drum sounds (bass punching you in the chest) are indeed effects. But sure, a lot of that punch is actually from the lows in the box, and the infamous Metallica CLICK is all 2" compression driver. And some people think that we put subs on an aux send because using subs is an "effect." But really -- if you want that bottom octave that is de rigeuer for what the kids these days call ROCK AND ROLL, you need subs.
Now I have no problem with bands sounding like Genesis, as long as Steve Hackett is playing guitar and Peter Gabriel is singing. That Collins guy's voice and his solo records, I have no use for, though his drumming is solid (though he's no Bruford).
I did a show with (one of) the School Of Rock All-Stars, and this 11-year-old kid sang "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" like nobody's business.

I believe the website auto generates the e-mail. You may want to check your spam catcher.
The 120 is labeled "short packet". To increase the refresh rate, shortening the packet (rather than sending the entire 512 bytes), should give a substantial increase.

I second the plywood base with rubber feet. Cheap and effective.
I don't bother with the countersink and just use a standard nut (the feet keep the bolt head off the floor).
1 piece of plywood, 3/4" 8"x8"
4 rubber feet (with integral nail)
1 large bolt with nut
1 hole

LEDs are a great choice. However, you are not going to get many for the budget you have allotted. Also, you should give some serious consideration to what you are going to use for a console to drive all of this. To keep it cheap and simple, I would look at the Chauvet Obey line. They are a bit tedious to run moving lights, but for the rest, they are fine. Program a few chases and you are off to the races (pun intended).
Considering the size of the area you are trying to light (dance floor), I would probably go with more lights with less punch. You can get a PAR 38 for under $40 with plug, clamp and lamp. They can hold up to 300 watt lamps, but a 125 will probably do fine. Since the primary colors of light are red, green and blue. I would recommend you go with 12 or 16 lights in groups of 4. RGB and a white or light amber. This will allow you to mix any color you want. The hazer is a must. I would go with a hazer before LED lights. Finally, I would give serious consideration to on of the inexpensive "disco" lights. There are a wide variety of them that will run basic chases. You will not be able to control them with DMX, but you can get a relay shoe box that will turn them on and off from the console.
Tim.
P.S. good luck! Lighting can add a lot of value.

I got into work today and the Technical Director wasn't in, BUT our consultant was. This guy knows detectors inside out, he designs the chemical recipe for smoke (someone has to), also in his spare time, he works in a theater. As far as credentials go, that's as good as it gets.
The news isn't what I expected. Haze and effect smoke WILL set off a detector, especially the more commercial optical types. It seems that they work on deflected light, so it doesn't matter what particles deflect it.
Its so bad that his theater installed a kill switch for the detectors (which is ok if there are people in the building).
So in short, categorically, Bugger!

Thanks for the good news Dave. The hazer goes back in the truck. Although I can swim well, I sure don't want to be the one to test it.
The Video guy there said there's thousands of gallons of water up near the roof that will drop when the system triggers. Apparently it's something about not knowing if the set pieces brought in by traveling shows are fire retardant or not. Seems overkill to me but then again, Rhode Island comes to mind. Very sad.
Thanks for the help, Keep well, Bob H

On a side note we were just thinking about Boulder the other day when we watched a couple episodes of Mork and Mindy on friday. The Sci-fi channel was having a marathon. I'd forgotten how funny that show could be. (Robin ad-libbing all the way if I remember correctly)

Hello,
For Robin Williams, it was the ad-libbing, the Alcohol and the Cocaine that put the "funny" in the Mork and Mindy Show.
