I have four Apollo Color Scrollers and four Elation Opti Par's that are about a year and a half old and have always lived in a case so they are a 9 out of 10 as far as condition goes. They cost me $1800. Let me know what you are willing to trade.
I am interested in:
LED lights
Moving Lights (elation design spot 250)
Mics
Cable Trunks (in really good shape - I do corporate)
Mic Stands (K&M, AKG, the better stuff)
Great Digital Camera
Outboard gear for the studio
...or if you have other things let me know.

Using any sound activation or just well timed with the beat programming? Which I have yet to figure out with LJ.

Folks...
I'm looking to replace our Elation Pro Scenesetter board (okay, stop laughing - I didn't order it!!).
The features of this board fit our needs, basically (I wouldn't mind more sliders, but that's not necessary). It handles manual dimming, basic DMX control, rudimentary programming, chases, sound sync, etc. Well, it's SUPPOSED to do all of those. In fact, most of the DMX universe seems to be composed of black holes, so far as this board is concerned.
:rant off:
Anyway, I need to replace this with a board with comparable features. I would love to have easier programming - perhaps at least a small screen to make it easier to tell what I'm doing. I also want to be able to save programs for backup, but I don't really care how. Otherwise, the features of this board fit my needs, and it's only used a few times a year, so I don't need to spend several thousand dollars. I'm hoping to shop for a used board on one of the good used equipment sites.
Any suggestions of good, low-end (cost-wise) workhorses that would fit this niche and might be found under $1,000 (either new or used)?
Any suggestions of stuff I might not be thinking about that should be on my wish list? Essentially, this is used for motivational events, for basic lighting of the stage and for effects between speakers (moving heads, strobes, gobos, etc.). I'd expect to have about 20-30 PARs hung for the basic lighting, and maybe 6 colorwash or trays (probably will run LED instruments for these), and a few effects/moving head instruments. I run with pre-programmed scenes (manually activated), and only need to make changes during a run if I lose an instrument.

| Tim Palmer wrote on Tue, 07 October 2008 15:52 | Check out the Bluelight x1 here http://www.innovateshowcontrols.com/index.php You can download the software for free and play with it.
You can buy the Mini for 399.00 load it on an old laptop and plug your sceensetter into the input of the mini and have all the control you want over a single 512 universe, very powerful
|
Intriguing...so, as long as my Scenesetter doesn't crap out entirely, I could use it to control the Mini, or I could use the laptop, am I correct? So, the board is no longer anything more than a set of controls for the programming in the X1.
This looks a lot like the system my hired pro had when we were diagnosing problems with the Scenesetter (not sure what all the problems were, but they really bugged the heck out of him!). This would give me a fall-back if the Scenesetter went out, as well, since I could use the controls on-screen, instead. And the software is free with the X1 Mini? That almost seems too cheap to be true - nice solution!
If I understand the capabilities right, I think you've made a sale!

There's a bunch of PC based solutions, better try out a bunch before buying.

I've read a bit about this particular solution, and I'm fairly certain it's the same one my hired pro had last year (or something amazingly similar). I'm not sophisticated enough a user to really get everything out of any of these solutions, and I've heard good things about the usability of this setup. I'm not sure it'd do much good for me to read up a bunch, and since the equipment is in storage for the next few moths, I won't have an opportunity to do a live test on a solution for a few months.
Unless there's a good reason I should look beyond the Bluelight X1 Mini, it probably sits on my list of items to recommend purchase on early next year. I mean, does it lack a feature or features I should be concerned about?

I'm making some upgrades to our corporate equipment, including our sound and lighting systems. The lighting system is only used a couple of times a year, but we do run special effects (have been able to borrow decent instruments in the past, but will no longer have that option every time).
I've looked at the price of good motorized instruments (way too high). And the cost of renting them (still a bit high, but not nearly as bad). And I've looked at the cheap stuff (Chauvet, etc.). I see instruments that I can buy for less than I can rent the good stuff, so here's my question: just how bad is the cheap stuff?
Essentially, if I can buy them and have them last a couple of years (that'd be 4 events or so, running 1-4 days each), then they'd more than pay for themselves versus the cost of rentals. Anyone used these things? Can I expect to get them to work that long, or are they going to drop pieces on my audience's heads the first time I fire them up?
I really do understand the value of the good stuff, but spending $6,000 on an instrument would be ridiculous in my situation, and it works better for my budget if I can buy for what rental would cost (frees up money for upgrades at the next event!).
I'm not a newbie to lighting, but I've been out a while, and all of these instruments came into common use while I was away, so I have no experience with the quality of various brands/styles.

Honestly the American DJ 250 movers are not half bad. Not the DJ movers, but the more expensive model ones. Had a LD bring them onto a gig one night and they out shined some older Mac 250's we had. Also look into the elation 250 spots.
