We should all be ashamed today. How these holidays have turned people into being the opposite of what their religions teach them I do not know, but this is a disgusting example of greed and mob rule.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/29/business/29walmart.html
| The New York Times | A Wal-Mart employee in suburban New York died after being trampled by a crush of shoppers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the store early Friday morning, turning the annual rite of post-Thanksgiving bargain hunting into a frenzy.
The 34-year-old employee, who was not identified, was knocked down by a crowd that broke down the doors of the Wal-Mart at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y., and surged into the store. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital at 6 a.m.
The police said that three other shoppers were injured and a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to the hospital for observation.
One shopper, Kimberly Cribbs, said she was standing near the back of the crowd at around 5 a.m. on Friday when people started pulling the doors from their hinges and rushing into the store. She said several people were knocked to the ground, and parents had to grab their children by the hands to keep them from being caught in the crush.“They were falling all over each other,” she said. “It was terrible.”
The Nassau County Police said the man’s exact cause of death had not been determined. Wal-Mart did not immediately respond to phone messages seeking comment.

I dislike Wally Word with a passion. I don't shop there and never will. I don't get the mentality of the Wal-Mart shopper.
The story above is very sad and puts the greed of the Holidays into a vivid mental picture.
Sad, just sad.

Just yesterday we were talking about these sales, and injuries that have happened in the past. I am saddened that it went this far this time. I'm sure the employee was just trying to put food on the table.

This is truly sad and is the kind of news that makes it's way around the world giving all Americans a bad rep. I like my toys as much as the next guy but they're definitely not worth more than a human life.

I don't know if I can help you understand the mentality, but I am a regular Walmart shopper (and own stock in the company). My attraction to shopping there is for the convenience, selection, and value.
The "Black Friday" phenomenon is much larger than Walmart, but they are in the retail business so play similar games to the other major retailers, many of whom opened up at dark o'clock this morning..
I visited my local Walmart yesterday around noon to do my Thanksgiving dinner shopping and got a good deal on some beef, with no crowd, no lines and no wait.
Retailers have gotten competitive with the price specials and Walmart leans out the window with the best of them. The irony is since this is predicted to be a lousy Christmas season for retailers, the low prices will probably persist long after this weekend.
There is wisdom in large numbers, but stupidity in mobs. The reports I heard, the employee killed was a contract worker, the store was closed for the rest of the day, and there was also at least one other shopper injured. I didn't hear anything about door hinges being damaged (this year, I vaguely recall reports of door damage from black Friday's past.)
Ah what fools these mortal be... Sounds like Filene's basement on steroids...
JR
edit-correction, door frame was damaged today, too.

While there is no justification for any premature death, it is remarkable how worked up we get over one rent a cop, trampled by rioting shoppers, while 150 and still counting innocents were just executed by islamic terrorists in Mumbai, or even how many loved ones here, had heart attacks after pigging out on too much turkey and stuffing, or while driving home from the relatives. But that won't get the ratings up on the evening news (...we want dirty laundry).
Death happens all around us every day, but we seem to fixate on isolated events the national news spoon feeds us, with a dollop of sensationalism. There's real stuff going on worth getting upset about. Lets see... how about terrorists trying to unravel the uneasy peace between two nuclear armed nations (India and Pakistan)?
The only embarrassment I suffer from the world viewing us is how petty and self involved we are. Over there they trample each other to death on religious pilgrimages.

I suppose that we get more worked up over one rent-a-cop death such as happened at Wally World because we can relate to that event, incredible as it is. I don't think that we can relate yet to the idea of organized groups of terrorist attacking several different sites at once and killing people en masse.
I stood in line this morning to save $20 on a drill/driver kit at Menards. If buying a house or car, I wouldn't even blink an eye over $20 saved or spent. NASA sure doesn't seem to be losing much sleep over the toolbag that floated away. (Haven't these people ever heard of tethers?). The money spent on the toolbag would pay my house off, but it's a drop in the bucket to the government. I guess it's all about perspective.

We get indignant because we think death at the shopping mall is "wrong" and somebody must be punished.. ah the evil corporation for having the sale, or selfish shoppers, whatever.
We need to learn to relate to terrorism.. those our our brothers and sisters under attack in another democracy, which just happens to be on the other side of the world. How many people do you think get killed but such attacks all around the world every week? Pirates in Somalia have some 300 crewmen held as hostages not to mention $B in booty.
I don't know if this attack is connected to alkeida withdrawing from Iraq after getting their butt kicked, but they're back in Pakistan making trouble there. There are reports suggesting the attack in India had some logistical support from outside India with Pakistan the unnamed actor, which is not good for relations between the two countries.
I think India can take care of business, but Pakistan will be under some serious stress. They have ramped up military operations in the border region with Afghanistan and this (India) could become another distraction, if Kashmir heats up again.

PS: NASA is very aware of the cost of adding some more space junk in orbit. They are probably more aware of the difficult economics that forces them to fly those obsolete shuttle platforms years past their expiration date.
