I have been what I call "self-unemployed" for more years than I care to think about......first as a musician, now as a "sound guy". As my name has gotten 'round and more offers come in I have occasionally done some "corporate" stuff as a hired audio hand for an A/V company (whom one works FOR) and an events company ( folks you work WITH). Well....
The events company has asked me to be their go-to guy for audio. As far as I know this would include designing the layout for each show, supervising set-up, running shows......and making decisions on equipment purchases/rentals.
I know that this would likely require me to get up to speed on things such as digital consoles, line array systems, etc. What else do I need to go to school on to be effective in such a position?
TIA

Dick,
If an opportunity to work in a profession you enjoy comes along, take the opportunity. You really won't know what additional training is required until you take the next step, and then you'll have time to do the research you need. Knowledge comes with experience. What else can be said for the job? Benefits, health, dental, a steady paycheck? Go for it, I'm sure you'll do fine.

The good thing about it is they have so much lighting that they have top riggers already on line. Video stuff likewise is someone else's department. Com I have already done for them, so no biggie there. I wouldn't have to lift anything heavier than a mic, so this may be the job I could retire TO.

What's not to love?
The only negative is you have to listen to corporate weenies spew all day long.
But you can learn to tune it out, while still appearing to pay rapt attention.
