I work at a district with 9 buildings and 5500 students. Currently we are using all sharp projectors and are starting to have failures. We also have a hand full of NEC that seem to be more reliable. I have also heard that NEC has a good educational program that gets us replacement lamps. The district trys to stadardize on one brand/model as much as possible to help keep lamps and installs consistent.
Any thoughts on good reliable and stable brand/models to look at?

We use a lot of NECs with few problems. The latest flavor seems to be the VT700. Good basic 3000 lumen projector. We have also used Sharp and they hold up pretty well. I just heard that a lot of our K12 sales are shifting to a re-badged NEC that Dukane is selling with a 5 year warranty.

We have a number of Epsons with mixed results.
The small ones, especially the 81P have major issues with filters that clog and over heat especially in a classroom environment. They also have non-removable "Internal filters" that clog and are a righteous pain in the ass to try and clean.
We also had an 81P in a classroom that the fan bearings went bad and started making alot of noise. We swapped it for another one who's bearings also went bad within 3 days. We called epson asking for part #'s for the fans (we do most of our repairs in house) and they wouldn't give us any info because we weren't "authorized". I guess having ~$1/2 million in epson projectors doesn't count for anything .
The 6100 / 7100 series has been ok, I'll call those the mid-size models
The 8300's we have, have been so so. They require a ton of ventilation and initially had temperature sensing firmware issues that epson corrected. They also require almost a complete teardown every 100 hours to clean dust out of or they overheat.
That being said I think the epsons have a nice image quality and feature set for the price. We've demo'd Panasonics and they look nice too.
Our handful of sonys have been reliable but I don't like their image quality, looks too dark.
The Sharps and Eikis we had weren't too bad.
All of the budget brands we have had such as infocus, optoma, optima, boxlight, and a few others have been utter crap.

Tom,
I use the NEC GT6000 and MT1065's.
My only issue with both models is that over time ALL of my units developed an image "droop" in the upper left hand corner.
It's more pronounced on the GT's but in all cases they roll downward from that corner.
Other than that, they have been very stable.

I work at a very large school district, and we have been buying Hitachis for several years and have been very pleased.
