Hello all,

I have a few questions for the likes of use using digi snakes with digi consoles.

Has anyone run into any issues using the Aviom AN-16/I-m input modules? I'm concern these pre's won't sound as good as the pre's on the M7CL. Any have an experience with Aviom digi snake options in general?

Josh,
I'm doing an install right now with this and using the Yamaha AD8HR units as preamps connected to the 6416dio and then to the Aviom card. I suspect those will be better pre's than the Aviom pre's and are HA recallable from the M7CL. I think you need Aviom's separate remote control to control the preamps from FOH with their preamp box. That doesn't appeal to me.

Jeff,

You are exactly right. You have to use Aviom's external Preamp control and i don't even think those units are shipping yet.

Aviom lists the Aviom AN-16/I-m as a set and forget device. I think i might can deal, but I'm still unsure. My only problem is, what if we shuffle the stage around a bit and move the drum channels from box 1/ch 1,2,3,4 to box 2/ch 5,6,7, and 8. I'll have to head back to the rack and set the gain again. Or if i have a performer come in with a condenser for the snare mic and i need activate phantom; I have to run back to the rack and push the phantom button.

You know what i saying. It won't be an issue 90% of the time, but the 10% might suck.

Thoughts?

I use the 16/o Y1 in one of my card slots to feed an AN 16/o unit which then drives 8 stereo ear sets. Works like a champ.

No experience with their mic pre's, so I can't speak to that, but if I was putting together a remote pre system for the M7 I'd using something I can control from the surface.

As I mentioned, just use the Yamaha AD8HR preamps and you can control gain and phantom direct from the M7CL. On aviom's site there is a document about the aviom digital snake with Yamaha mic pre's. You need a 6416dio for every 16ch of Yamaha pre's.

No gain control at FOH is not something I would want to deal with. Neither is using a separate remote, although I suppose one could get used to that with time.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I check prices on the AD8HR and the 6416DIO...dude. They aren't cheap at all. The 12k price point for the 32 channel Pro16 digi snake with 6 personal monitors wasn't too bad, but it's close to 18k to do the same thing on the Pro64 platform with the remote controable pre's.

I haven't ruled it out, i just might have to let a few more chips fall in the install before i take the plunge.

The more I think about the lack of desk top preamp control, the more i think that would suck real hard in some instances.

Sure it's not CHEAP, but take a look at other digital snake pricing and it starts to look very reasonable. It's also something that is expandable later. If budget really is that tight then move down to the LS9-32 so long as it works for your application. That'll save more than enough to pay for this upgrade and then some.

Yeah, when comparing Aviom solutions to other digi snake company's, there price rocks. Comparing Aviom solutions to copper...not so much. Albeit, copper having far less flexibility and expandability. That's my goal; flexibility, but i can't break the install over it. I've got 80k (ish) for the audio portion of the install and the 20k mark on the digi snake is tough to swallow. Dropping down to the LS9 could save it, but i really like the single layer of the M7. Small issue, i know. Smile

Keep in mind with the LS932 you can only go with 32 channels of remote pre controlable by the board. If you can live with that then the LS9 with a good digi snake could make a real nice setup. Keep in mind that the LS9 has the custom fader layer, and that can help take care of a lot of the layer switching if you use it well.

If your only justification for the M7CL over the LS9 is one of layers and not channels then I don't think that is worth the significant cost difference. You know the program material, so I guess it's your call. Given the choice, sure, everyone might prefer the M7CL if they cost the same. But with M7 roughly double the price that should justify your Aviom solution in terms of savings. Don't forget about the savings with the aviom in terms of a simpler cable run during installation.
