Diluted Fog, "Steam Jet/CO2 Burst" Effect? [message #323299]

Nothing Better To Do

I am looking for the lightest fog I can find, something that fires and then quickly disperses almost immediately.

I just came across this product:

"Steam simulation fluid specifically designed for ‘steam’ effects. Creates a white burst, but is fast dispersing."

Which does exactly what I want, almost like a CO2 discharge effect but from a fogger. Problem is, I can only find this fluid in 25L quantities @ $199/bottle! And there are only 3 machines which 'officially' run it.

SO, my question is this: Can I take regular fog fluid, dilute it with distilled water, and get the same effect?

Anyone have any luck with this, or is this not the right way of thinking?

Well, I'll answer my own question since I played around a little with this yesterday...

My fog machine has no "Minimum" output to "Maximum" output slider switch or knob like on some higher-end models. Putting distilled water in with the fog juice is akin to bringing the knob down from Max output to Min output. The fog will last just as long once you have enough of it in the air, so adding the water doesn't shorten the dissipation rate, only the amount outputted by the fogger. What determines how long it will hang appears to be the fog solution itself, not watering it down.

Urgh Sad

So I am still on my quest for a fog juice that fires, and then disappears. Simply diluting it just turns down the output completely.

I have used rosco stage and studio fluid in an application similar to what you are describing.

I believe it is formulated for there machines, but it could certainly work in others.

It does dissipate very quickly.

I guess the only question I have for you is what you are doing? Normally when trying to accomplish a cryo effect, you usually need multiple cryo nozzles to accomplish it.

This means that when you are accomplishing that effect with fog machines you want multiple nozzles like the martin hyrda machine.

Are you trying to use multiple machines, or do you really only need one output place?

Yes, I am going for the "poor man's chro effect" where I don't need to rent actual CO2 tanks, or invest $10,000 (!) in the Martin Hydra beast!

I recently came across this fluid: Le Maitre Extra Quick Dissipating fluid. They bill it as "Dissipates nearly immediately after blasting the machine. Use in any water based fogger where a "steam" effect is required."

It's somewhat hard to find in the states (BMI Supply stocks it) but at $38/gal it is much more reasonable than Martin's $200 minimum jug of their quick dispersing formulation.
