I have a sort of odd situation here.
I want to set up a preexisting audio snake for an installed mixing console so that I can feed some in-ceiling monitor speakers from an aux on the board. So basically I would have, say, send "C" on the snake, which leads via the ELCO connector to the main rack, and from the main rack that send would be connected to the "long" line that goes to the in-ceiling speakers, >100' away.
The problem is, the mixer only has unbalanced auxes for some dumb reason, and the speaker amp will be at the other end of the "long" line, and also only has unbalanced inputs. I know I need a balanced line along the long run to keep out interference, but I'm not sure how I should do it. I was thinking of installing a direct box or something in the main rack, so basically the unbalanced signal coming from the multipin breakout in the rack would be connected to the direct box, which would be connected to the long cable run, but even then, should I just leave the shield unconnected at the other end? I'm not too worried about the unbalanced out of the mixer, not much I can do about that anyway, and the hum pickup along that run isn't so bad (tolerable at least for this application).
Anyway, how would you go about this?
Thanks,
Dan

Transformers on each end. I use Edcor for lo/mid-fi applications and Jensen for critical applications.

Dan,
Is this for a permanent install? Or a couple of shows?
Your "C" output(RCA) insert RCA male/1/4" female adapter, then 1/4" male to 1/4" male (guitar cable 2'long) into direct box, from DI XLR into snake (Console side)
Snake (rack side at stage?) XLR all the way to Ceiling speaker mixer then into another DI, Plug 1/4" male to 1/4" male (guitar cable 2' long) into adapter 1/4" female to RCA male.
You'll Need:
2 DI's
2 RCA males to 1/4" Females
2 Guitar Cables (as short as possible)
2 XLR cables: 1 10' long
1 long enough to go from rack to ceiling mixer
The DI's have a transformer in them
If this is for a permanent install, I'd go Don's route and use jensen transformers permnently mounted somewhere
Good Luck

Dan,
Because your Aux has Unbalanced Outputs.
You NEED TWO Transformers to do what you want to do!
The First transformer takes the Unbalanced signal and creates an inverted copy of the signal and sends the two signals through the snake as a Balanced signal. The second transformer at the other end adds the two signals together rejecting any noise introduced along the path and once again creates an Unbalanced signal to be input into the ceiling speaker amp.
Good Luck

Gentlemen, please read Dan's original post.
He has an Unbalanced Output (Mixer Aux), he needs to run a distance of approx. 100 ft.(Balanced), then he needs to go to his Unbalanced input on the Amp.
Cheers,
