I've only had to use AT wireless mics once (as the OP said, they're not that popular here), but my biggest problem with it was the audio quality. Admittedly, we were using it on a beatboxer, but I was still dissapointed with how it compared to the Shure Betas.

We have 4 AT3142 handhelds. Work great sound great. BTW, if they sound hot distorted etc. turn gain down a little on back of unit. We had this problem originally and set the gain on the transmitter to +6DB and the gain knob on the receiver to aprox +60% above min.
Helped alot.

What I don't like about the 7000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 Series.
7000- 9 volt batteries, no battery meters
2000- limited channels, wall wart on receiver, no battery meters
3000- Wall wart on receiver, volume control on back, limited gain settings on transmitters
4000- bodypack helical antenna useless at short/long distance on a belt, limited gain settings, volume control on back of receiver
I have 2 channels of 7000/U100, 9 channels of 3000, and 3 channels of 4000. I bought the 7000 after I purchased the U100 video mic system, so that I would have a full range of bodypack, plugon, and handheld with a choice of camera or rack mount receivers. I got duper deals on these, or I wouldn't have purchased them, knowing about the white space issue.
However, I was very disappointed when I purchased my first bodypack and it turned out to be a 1400 series instead of a 7000 series like I thought from the picture. That bit me where it hurts when the brand new battery put in the night before died during Sunday school the next morning. That was 4 years ago and I sold the 1451 and bought 3000 series.
I prefer the 1604VLZPRO to a Shure Pro Master 706 powered head, wouldn't you?

I'm currently using the 5200 series with the 5400 capsule on Dream Theater's tour and it's working out great. No RF issues at all and it sounds very natural on James' vocal. He's been happy in his ears and I've been happy out front since we changed. I highly recommend them.
