Hi,
I live in Bruges, which is like 50 km from Ypres, Passendale, Diksmuide, ...
Every summer, there's a festival I work right next to the "Flanders Fields Museum" in Ypres. I still remember visiting the graves and the "Dodengang" in and around diksmuide as a little boy... We stopped playing soldier after that day.
WWI is not forgotten around here, although the nationalist parties around here seem to have forgotten the most important thing to remember: "No More War". That's what was written on the first "Ijzertower" that was erected to commemorate the Great war as it is called around here.
It still makes me silent if I walk around the museum, and sick when I touch the sandbags where so many died...
But to be honest, I had to google the poem myself, just to be sure... 
To keep this on topic: I know for a fact there are no wild racoons in Flanders!
