| Basic starter sound company seminar[ 31 vote(s) ] |
| 1. | Yes, $695 for 2.5 days | 9 / 29% | | 2. | Yes, but less than $695 for 2.5 days | 16 / 52% | | 3. | Not sure, tell me more | 6 / 19% |
Here's what I envision:
How to design a modular system that snaps together.
Selecting a loudspeaker system that suits your business model.
Putting together a respectable monitor rig.
Getting the right consoles.
Packaging - cases, racks, all that stuff
Understanding electricity, power distro basics
Basic stage craft - work like you've done it before
Demystifying the "rider" game (it's only a game if you don't understand why it's there in the first place...)
Complying with DOT regulations, and general trucking/transportation issues.
Finding work.
Basic system alignment and equalization topics.
Anything else someone might ask. If you knew then (when you were starting out) what you know now, how would you have done things differently?
Who would be interested in a class similar to this? Target audience is those doing club or local type events, looking to move up to the next level.

good point doug.
putting down around 1250$ to attend this is a priceless investment ...
you cant put a dollar sign on the amount of time, disappointment and frustration this could save people like myself that are standing on the line between supporting my sound hobby with a day job, and the sound business being my day job that supports hobbies on free weekends

Hi Scott-
The choice of location is based on the availability of the presenters, I think.
Put the seminar fee in perspective... it's less than the cost of a single bad purchasing decision, say a power amp or speaker. One of the proposed topics is modularity, and if you do it right you can grow parts of your rigs incrementally. That's worth the price of admission by itself.
Only you can decide what things are worth to you.
Having discussed this course briefly with Fowler, I think it's a tremendous opportunity that anyone who's considering the Business of Sound should take. This is a seminar that will help you understand and decide if you really want to take the plunge. After attending you might decide your market isn't where it needs to be for you to make enough money to justify the labor and expense. On the other hand, you might see a market that is underserved, or is capable of more income if your rig is packaged right.
You'll spend time with 20 or so people who are where your are, or have been there. The presenters are a couple of crusty guys that have been there, done that, and give away the shirts. The amount of information and experiences to be shared are priceless and you'll meet some really great people. Oh, expect the catering to be good (the BBQ should be awesome).
To sweeten the deal, Fowler should teach Smaart 101/102 the day after, for an additional fee. A bonus would be if Yamaha or another manufacturer would do a training seminar on a non-conflicting day that same week in STL. Could make for one fast learning excursion!
Have fun, good luck.
