getting rock sound from a clean system [message #160731]

Should Get Out More

If you have a system that is very clean and too loud to push to its limits in most venues, what do you do to give it a little (distortion/grind/crunch)that classic heavy metal band sound. Then, what do you do / put on the sound to make it all come together as a single wall of sound out front. If you want to get more precise, how would you do all this with an 01v96. Smile

Your ideas/experience are appreciated........as always.

You could use the guitar amplifier simulator in the effects and dial in what you want Laughing

.

Just insert it in the main L/R outputs.

It might be worth a try, I have no idea how it will really sound, but might be fun. But as with any effect don't overdo it.

For every complicated question-there is a simple- easy to understand WRONG answer.

Can I have some more talent in the monitors--PLEASE?

I don't look at live sound this way (like you might with a studio recording or mastering). if the sound coming out of the amps onstage is clean, then your sound is clean. If the band isn't "rocking," then nor will your mix.

Adding distortion has been discussed before.. I recall a tc electronic unit.. the C3? that has a setting with mild distortion as a component. Might be worth looking into...

Also, you might try a forum search for 'adding distortion.'

Hopefully,I understand your question. I'll give it a shot.
That grunge,distortion that you are talking about should not be produced by your PA, but by the guitars onstage and brought into the mix by you. Most hard rock and heavey metal music is punctuated by a "big" drum sound,so proper micing,gates,compression and effects can help you get what you want there.These acts also tend to use alot of effects on the vocals. But the key to getting everything to come together, and give you the sound you want(at a volume that is acceptable to the the venue ), is to make sure the stage volume is under control. If the guitars or bass are too loud on stage,you will end up with a mix that's not balanced or, you will have unacceptable volume levels because you are trying to bring everything else up to match them.It can easily get out of control.

Hey Rich,

I have a friend who is very analogue friendly and doesnt like how 'clean' my 01v96 sounds. I played around with inserting the equaliser 601 from the channel strip package on the main outs and it definitely introduced some harmonic distortion that analogue friendly people might find more pleasing to their ears.

You can play around with it yourself as if you hold the effect button down as you turn the console on (as long as its the latest firmware version) you get 10 minutes use.

Try it out, see if you like it ... I prefer it clean myself!

I wouldn't want to add any distortion myself. As an effect it would work cool but to run the entire show that way would bug me. My rig is very clean and has lot o' headroom while being plenty loud. Even heavy metal and punk bands sound great without coming close to clipping. I just don't see any reason to add any distortion.

Now if you just aren't happy with the sound of a console that a whole different issue. You might want a console that sounds a little different to get what you want.
