Since I was sitting around with nothing to do on a dark day here in Vegas, I decided to measure the latency of the PM5D-RH that have on my show. I used the delay finder in SMAART to measure, and an ESI U24 USB audio interface to my computer. My first setup was osc out of ST B left and right, left run to input 48, routed to a group, and then to the left input of the U24, right to right input of U24. This was an analog in to analog out measurement. At 48K sample rate the latency was 2.56ms, and at 96k it was 1.27ms. The second setup was SP/DIF out of console into the U24 digitally. I routed the osc out digital out 1 and back in digital in 1, as well as out Digital out 3 right. I then routed digital in 1 Left to input 48, and routed 48 to a mix bus, and that out digital out 3 L. This gave me a digital in to digital out latency of .95ms at 48K. I was unable to measure at 96K as the U24 doesn't support it. I then added an analog insert to ch 48 via MY8-DA, and MY8-AD cards, and this added 1.79ms of latency for the 2 analog conversions. To sum up:
48k - analog in to analog out - 2.56ms
48k - digital to digital - .95ms
48k - analog insert add 1.79ms
96k - analog to analog - 1.27ms
All of these times are actually shorter than I expected, and should have little impact in most cases.

Hi guys.. I am getting on a boat for a few weeks with my 2 m7cl's... I plan on checking the i/o latency with smart during some down time.. I will report what I find with a new thread... I am interested in the latency of the Foh M7 because I installed a myadat card and am using a Frontier Design Tango 8 channel ad/da/ converter and an Alesis Ai3 .. I used this combo last weekend and inserted some of my analog comps on various inputs with success.. I dont think I can get away with this setup on monitor duty with in ears and a a sharp muso... The latency has gotta start getting too cumlative...
cheers Marty B

Hey Mac:
I got slightly different results, I'm curious... Are you on a RH? What firmware are you using?
I took a couple of other measurements, in case anyone else is interested. I posted them on the 5D homepage.

Anybody got a comprehensive list of the processing delays of the other consoles, besides the 5D?
Consoles of interest:
Digico D-1
Digico D-5
PM-1D
M7-CL
DM-2k
Innovason SY-80
Innovason SY-40

What is the contribution of widely used functionality inside a channel block to the total delay?
As an example, if you route Digital Channel in to Digital Stereo Out, how much does enabling/disabling/tweaking channel EQ, HPF, Comp, Gate etc affect the delay?
I'd assume that the 96kHz delay should always be half of the 48kHz delay, the internal blocksize/latency in samples is probably the same for both samplerates.

I measured Analog Channel in to stereo and came up with 0.0 mS ADDED (EDIT) with all of the above.

This is wonderful!!!!!!
At one time I was going around all the digital console measureing IR to determine the latency.
Bink, I can have a friend at mackie measure an IR of the tt24 later this week. Ill measure the UMX later in Australia I didnt have time at the show. Its supposed to be close to 2.3ms with out the system processor, and around 3.4 with the system processor.
Also!!!!!
If you do double bussing I strongly recomend a different solution. Every digital console I have seen that allows double bussing have atleast a .5ms difference. This causes severe comb filtering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and theres nothing you can do about it except go thru a matrix. I have IR for a dm2000 and an O1v96, they all have the same problem. The only one I have seen that doesnt have this problem is the innovason, only because its not possible to double route.
